That removes the most obvious fallback — "just answer it yourself" — for exactly the businesses least able to staff around it. Most electrical contractors are small: one or two trucks, an owner who also runs jobs, maybe a part-time person handling calls between other tasks. Two numbers get cited constantly in this space. Both are worth knowing, and neither was measured on electrical contractors. There is no electrician-specific figure here because none survived checking; anything quoted as one deserves a click through to its origin.
The more-quoted of the two comes from Vexion Systems, an AI vendor selling into field service, which prints 62% of field service calls go unanswered and a 42-hour average response time to a new lead on one page of its site. The scope there is every trade at once — plumbing, HVAC, electrical, the rest — and the source is a company selling the remedy, which makes it a framing of the problem rather than a measurement of your shop.
The second is broader still. OnceHub's call-handling guide cites a study finding that small and mid-sized businesses miss an estimated 25%–60% of inbound calls, depending on staffing and after-hours coverage. A range that wide can't be tested against any single shop. What travels is the clause after the comma: staffing sets coverage. A two-truck electrical shop with nobody assigned to the phone after six fits the high-end description without anyone having counted electricians. That's grounds for concern; it isn't evidence about the trade.
Counting the cost without inventing a number
No dollar figure appears in this section, and that's deliberate. Averages for this get published constantly, sourced to nothing in particular. The value of an electrical service call is one of those numbers with no citable average behind it, so the accounting here stays qualitative.
The most direct cost is the search behavior described earlier: a caller working down a list doesn't wait once your name gets passed over. There's no grace period where they're sitting by the phone hoping for a callback — by the time you notice the missed call, they've likely booked with whoever answered next. The ticket is the cheap part, though. There's also a piece that's genuinely different about electrical work, stated plainly and without dramatizing it: some of what's rolling to voicemail isn't a job that can wait until morning. A caller describing warm outlet covers, a burning odor, or visible sparking is describing something that ideally reaches a person, not a recording, regardless of whether it becomes billable work that night. The question worth answering first is what share of your nights actually can wait for a callback.
At the third shop, something answers instantly, asks what's happening and where, checks who's actually available tonight, and books directly against the real schedule. A system that asks the right follow-up question — "is there a smell, or just no power?" — closes the gap the first two shops couldn't: fast pickup paired with an answer that reflects genuine availability, not a guess. It's also the least tested of the three by definition, since it hasn't had decades to prove itself the way a payroll hire or an answering-service industry has. A shop weighing it should feed it a burning-smell scenario before a routine one and watch specifically for how it escalates, not just how fast it picks up.
