Electrical call triage: power loss vs outlet repair, a decision tree
Two callers can say almost the same sentence and mean two different jobs. "The power's out" from one caller means a breaker that needs a two-minute walkthrough over the phone. From another, it means a house with no power in the middle of a heat wave and someone inside who depends on refrigerated medication. Nothing in the wording tells you which one you're hearing — the tone might not either. Whoever answers has to ask, in a specific order, before deciding what happens next.
Quick answer: a short list of conditions is never triaged by severity — it goes straight to a human, every time, no exceptions. Once a call clears that list, work through it in order: whole-house loss (and whether it's just this house or the whole block), partial loss on a circuit, a major system that's completely non-functional, a single dead outlet or fixture, and finally, whether you're hearing a specific fault or a vague symptom that needs a follow-up question before it can be sorted at all. Decide the response windows once, as policy, and the sixth call of a bad night gets sorted the same way the first one did.
What never gets triaged by severity
Before any question about how urgent a call is, some things aren't urgency questions at all — they're immediate escalations, full stop.
A burning smell. Visible smoke. Sparks or arcing anywhere in the system. A breaker that won't reset, or one that resets and trips again. An outlet, switch, or cord that's warm or hot to the touch. None of these get weighed against the schedule board, ranked by how bad they sound, or asked a follow-up question to narrow down. Every one of them routes to a human immediately, regardless of what else is on the calendar.
Smoke and active sparking carry an instruction that comes before the electrician does: get out of the building, then call 911 or the fire department, and only after that does anyone think about scheduling a technician. A caller describing smoke should hear "leave the house now and call 911" before they hear anything about a truck being dispatched. This is the one place where the order matters more than the speed — safety first, service second, never the reverse.
This list sits above the decision tree below, not as its first branch but as a filter that runs before the tree starts. A caller who says "there's kind of a burning smell, I think, maybe from the outlet" doesn't get diagnosed more carefully over the phone — the ambiguity itself is the signal to escalate, not a reason to ask two more questions first.
Sorting everything else
Once a call clears the list above, triage becomes a matter of asking the remaining questions in a fixed order.
- Safety hazard? Anything on the list above skips this tree entirely.
- Whole-house power loss — is it just this house, or the whole block? A caller with no power anywhere in the home should get one clarifying question before anything else: has a neighbor lost power too, or checked their own panel? If it's the neighborhood, that's a utility outage, not an electrical emergency, and no truck needs to roll — the caller needs to be told to call the utility company, not wait on a technician who can't fix a grid problem. If it's just their house, that's a real whole-house electrical failure and belongs at the top of the queue.
- Partial loss on one circuit or area? A kitchen that's dark while the rest of the house has power, or a run of outlets on one breaker that's gone dead, is a narrower problem than whole-house loss but still moves ahead of most other calls — something on that circuit failed, and it's worth finding out what before it takes the rest of the panel with it.
- Is a major system completely non-functional? A well pump with no water pressure behind it, a sump pump that's stopped during a storm, or any equipment tied to someone's medical needs — a powered wheelchair charger, refrigerated medication, home oxygen — belongs ahead of ordinary circuit problems even when nothing about the wiring itself looks dangerous. The urgency here isn't electrical severity, it's what stops working downstream when the power does. Ask what the circuit feeds before deciding how fast it needs to move.
- Single outlet or fixture? One dead outlet, one dead switch, one light that won't turn on, with everything else in the house working normally, is the calmest version of an electrical call. It can wait days without anyone being at risk, and treating it otherwise just burns a same-day slot that a more pressing call might need.
- Symptom, or specific fault? A symptom is a feeling; a fault is a noun. "The lights seem dim" is the first kind; "the bathroom GFCI won't reset" is the second. Only the second can be run through the questions above. The first earns a callback, not a tier assigned to a hunch.
Two shops can order these six differently and both be right. Neither can order them differently on Tuesday than on Friday.

Same call, two ways to get it wrong
A caller reports that the upstairs bedroom outlet stopped working, and so did the ceiling fan on the same wall. That's the entire report — nothing more has been asked yet.
Sent out that night on the assumption that two dead things must mean something serious, a technician usually finds a tripped GFCI or a shared circuit — a five-minute fix that didn't need an after-hours drive across town. Do that on enough ordinary calls and the on-call rotation stops functioning as a safety net; it becomes a tax on whoever's holding the pager that week, paid regardless of whether tonight's call turns out to matter.
Scheduled out five days because neither symptom sounded dramatic, the same call turns out differently: that outlet and that fan share a circuit with the sump pump in the basement, and it's the rainy season. Nobody asked what else was on that circuit, so nobody caught it until the basement did.
Treating a description as a diagnosis is what connects both outcomes. "Outlet and a fan" isn't a triage tier on its own — it's an incomplete report that got sorted anyway, once toward too much caution and once toward too little, because the one question that would have separated the two calls never got asked: what else is on that circuit, and what depends on it? The fix isn't a sharper instinct for reading tone over the phone. It's asking that question before committing to a time, every time, so the answer comes from the caller's wiring instead of the dispatcher's guess.
